I am no longer taking commissions at this time since don't have enough time to tackle commissions along with my school work. When I have opened them up again, I will keep all of the details here. Until then, if you have any questions, send me a Note on here, Fan Mail on my Tumblr, or email me at CommissionBunbun@gmail.com.

How to Critique

5 min read
Critique!

The purpose of critique is to help whoever is being critiqued to improve.

Also:

There is a difference between being a bully and being a critic.

Let's say you come across a drawing of a person, but the anatomy is very inaccurate.
Saying something like, "Wow, this is terrible. You're an awful artist; you should stop trying and get a different hobby" is anything but helpful. To critique something, you should let the person know what they are doing that isn't successful, such as saying "I can see what you are trying to do, but your sense of anatomy has room for improvement." It would be even more helpful to specifically point out what you think needs improvement- "For example, her back is twisting unrealistically, and her fingers are a tad short."
It would also be polite of you to point out things that they are doing that are successful- "Despite the anatomical inaccuracies, you handle the shading well." If you ignore everything that is successful then you're going to come across as an arrogant know-it-all that is never pleased, and EVEN IF YOU ARE OKAY WITH THAT, know that this makes the person you're critiquing a lot less likely to actually listen to you.

On that topic- If you are critiquing someone in any way, shape, or form, you need to allow them to improve. People can be prideful creatures. The more condescending and unnecessarily rude you are, the more they are going to not want to listen to you and continue on their own way in order to prove you wrong. If they are sensitive, then they may just give up altogether. You need to not be a jerk if you want to actually make the impact that you want. This goes for all critique, not just drawing.

To emphasize this point, here's a video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0la5DB…

Before you say that you don't care if you upset people, understand, again, that there is a difference between critiquing and bullying. Being rude and condescending is not helpful. It makes you a bully. Before you say "I don't care if I'm a bully", take a moment to think about the impact bullies make on others. It doesn't only apply to children.

Another thing that you should not do to critique someone is push your preferences onto them. If you don't like a certain medium, subject, or style, then that is fine. It's okay to not like things. However, trying to make everyone's style conform to your specific tastes is a closed-minded action. People can do what they'd like; they don't need to make what you like. If you have a problem with looking at gory roadkill art, then simply don't look at gory roadkill art.

For example, it irritates me to no end if all I see of an artist's works are overly sexualized people. So what do I do? I don't look at it. It's a tad difficult when a ton of awesome digital painters I've come across do that in some way (especially when drawing women, I've found…), but I've learned to just avoid it when I can, and appreciate the things that I like if I do find it.
All I'm saying is that telling others to do things in a certain style (or in some cases, in any style except a particular style) and not accepting anything else (or telling them that it is wrong, or it not "real" art) is being biased.

And then there's the whole "it's my style" being used as an excuse to not learn proper anatomy. While it is ideal to have a style that you can call your own, having consistent structure and proportions to figures makes your style, whatever it may be, into stylized people rather than a collection of mismatched assumptions of what body parts look like at different angles. Not everything has to be realistically accurate, though it's a common preference that things are- at least to an extent (If you are drawing a human, have it be recognizable as a human. If you are drawing a dog, have it be recognized as a dog. If you are drawing an original creature, have at it- just be consistent whenever you draw it.).

If you are an artist and face people pushing their preferences onto you, recognize this action for what it is- don't conform to someone else's likes. As my favorite art teacher, Mrs. Donnelly once said, "Don't draw for them; draw for you." Do what makes you happy; don't let someone take that away because they want you to do something else. Suggestions for trying new styles, however, is acceptable. After all, suggesting is part of critique. Don't assume that suggestions are demands, though. Not everyone is out to get you; their input may be beneficial.

Now I know I keep going back to critique aimed at exclusively artwork, but many of these things can be used towards critique of any sort. Keep an open mind, and don't shoot down those trying to help you. On the other hand, critique people, do not bully them. You fail to help people if you make it difficult for them to see helpful input in your words.

And for the love of all that is holy, do not tell someone to stop doing something that they love.

Free Requests!

1 min read
I will be taking drawing requests next vacation in an effort to build up a portfolio for possible freelancing. When that time comes, I'll let you all know. I'll be accepting everything thrown at me, so if you want something drawn, comment with what you want.

So COME AT ME BRO

And when I say "everything thrown at me" that means everything but explicit themes. :|
